Nice Idea Poorly Executed March 19, 2010 Th Allen (UK lincs) First off the graphics are amazing but unfortunately it doesn't save the game for me. I accept that there are some moments that do make you jump and are edge of your seat but all of these are essentially button bashing fests. Also the tedium that you must endure in the build up to these events is not worth the reward of the exciting moments. An example is on about 3 occasions I had to go to a medicine cabinet find some bandages etc and sort another person out. The first time I did it, it was a novel experience however after the third time I sold the game. I really really wanted to like this game and it has some really nice aspects to it, however they are endlessly repeated making it a painstakingly dull afair.
Also the character relationships were horrible and cheesey to the point where; I couldn't really care if one of them couldn't sleep or if you can't find your son etc. I found all the characters incredibly annoying. The only thing that is probably more annoying is the limited view fields that you have. Considering the beauty of the graphics in the game I expected to be able to have a good look at them all. It is infuriatingly annoying though that you can not look around to try and help you with the game though. Two examples I cam across were whislt at a party and collecting evidence for the FBI. The limited views available made it extremely difficult too complete certain areas.
The options for choice i didn't find satisfacory either. There is a point when your trying to calm down a religious fanatic who is pointing a gun at your partner. I chose to try and reason with him rather then just blowing him away. However your character basically eggs the other character on too shoot him. Obviously this winds him up and I felt I had to shoot him then. The gripe with this being it was in no way shape or form reasoning.
The talk of playback and options to change the ending are also hollow I think since the opening scenes and sequences are so long with a real lack of options available meaning that any one who wants to change the story line would have to be a real avid fan to sit through all the nonsence at the start.
Considering it was meant to be an interactive film, I find it even further grating that the script is so poor. It has an almost 'Taken' feel to it i.e lone crusader saving son/daughter except your an architect in this rather than a double hard ex-CIA agent.
In conclusion I felt this game took what was bad from games (button bashing and annoying camera angles) and mixed it with what was bad from films(cheesy I love you dad moments and ridiculous lone wolf antics) and it just doesn't work.
I really wanted to love this game and perhaps I build my anticipations too high, but for me it is not the game but the let down of the year.
A really bizarre but entertaining game! March 18, 2010 Mr. M. G. Wale (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is defiantly a true landmark in video gaming, the trials in the game (DONT WORRY NO SPOILERS HERE!) for ethan and others are absolutely brilliant, the game gets you to really enthuse and enjoy every part of it and the ending can actually be very emotional! I loved it and have played through it twice to get very different endings. I should have got the happiest ending as even if they all live (this is fairly hard) then it can still go badly, i will not ruin it for anyone but the endings are really well thought out and you really like some characters, only to hate them by the end of the game. Apparently there may be a film, which would be awesome, but overall, it was a different style of game with more choices than any other ever before, mass-effect (which is a good game) is still no where near as different, and choices don't mean or do as much. Overall a really nice change, and different pace to other games which have been out before.
The gameplay is new and interesting and the graphics are absolutely outstanding, also a great use of the six-axis controller, character development is phenomenal, my only criticism is that it glitches a bit and may need to be restarted if it freezes where you cant move the characters but everything else keeps going.A sequel would be great but only if they can keep the story fresh and believable. A must buy for gamers and newbs alike!
Ok, but not quite what I had expected. March 18, 2010 Steve This is my first review so I hope the fanboys and other critics wont be too hard on me! After all, these are simply my views. (Sorry if it seems a little long)
I have played through the entire story several times now. (several replays in order to unlock different endings and trophies/achievements)
The most important thing for me when it comes to a game is that it must be fun. Heavy rain, although unlike any other game that I have played was fun the first time I played through it. I was gripped by the story and I couldn't wait to finish it and find out what happened next.
The way in which the story was told was very good in that it kept my attention and aside from a couple of frustratingly long sequences with very little interaction worked very well.
The first time I played through the game I did not realise that you can go back to any chapter and play the story from there - My understanding was that if you made a decision, you had to live with it - and what ever happened was final - This made the action sequences genuinely exciting for me as I really didn't want to mess up.
So, with that in mind, my first play through was great. fun story, exciting sequences and at times, I did feel very immersed in the game's atmosphere.
It is a terrible shame that I did not take the game back to the shop then and trade it in for something else. I had finished MY story and thought it was very exciting, and very entertaining.
Unfortunately, I played it again and in doing so, I realised a few things which took a lot away from my enjoyment - and even managed to taint the first (seemingly brilliant) play through.
I learnt that despite several occasions in the game where you are given a choice - It invariably did not matter what choice was made as shortly after, the story would steer back on course towards the fixed plot.
for example (and I will keep this vague so as not to spoil anything - and those who have played it will recognise the scenes):
You get the choice at one point to kill a person. if you kill him, the scene ends shortly after and the dead person plays no further part in the story. if you do not kill him, the scene ends and the person also plays no further part in the story.
In a similar situation you can chase someone; who if caught plays no further part in the story. But if you let him go, he plays no further part in the story either.
and so the pattern emerges...
I puposely made the opposite choices when I played through the 2nd time so as to get a different storyline, but I was dissapointed to find that it had little to no effect.
That said, there are a couple of occasions where you can make decisions which will impact on the story - these choices will be so blatant however, that you will know what to do and what the consequences will be. These choices ar often, simply to fail at a particular objective.
On an even more frustrating note, during the action sequences, it didn't seem to matter if you failed the majority of the QTE button combinations - as long as you got a couple of them, or the last few, then you would successfully pass that segment.
In some cases the game will give you a choice: eg: run left or right whilst being chased. First time round, I went left. The second time, I went right, just to see what would happen differently... On choosing right, he goes right, realised his path was blocked and goes to the left anyway!
This happens a LOT - But you wouldn't notice it on a single play.
In some scenes you have a choice of what to do out of 4 or more responces, only 1 will progress the story - if you are unlucky enough to choose that response first, then you can find yourself missing out on a lot of dialogue and some of the plot. What I mean here is that through no fault of your own, you can choose an option that will end the scene, without ever intending to do so!
My biggest dissapointment though, was when I learned that, the game had been miss sold to me; I was led to believe that choices and decisions made, even seemingly miniscule choices, would directly influence the story. I understood this to mean that there were a number of possibilities including the endings, and more importantly, who the killer was. I thought (and this was backed up by the countless red herrings in the game)that depending on my decisions, there may be different storylines which resulted in different killers. This is not true - and I'm surprised that no one else has touched on this aspect.
Instead, what you get is 1 story, and depending on how well you do, the game lets you see certain parts of it. Leading up to the final scene where depending who you take to this scene (ie: who is still alive and knows where to go) will play out a set number of ending sequences which either range from 'happily ever after' to misery and failure( frustratingly followed by unskippable credits!)
So basically - You play right through for the last scene, and depending on who is there, you get a different ending.
The game is brilliant for one play through only. There after, plot holes begin to emerge - and there are a few big ones!
One other thing worth a mention: while the graphics are superb, and lifelike - the voice acting is incredibly bad. There are a few laughable lines which really did spoil the mood of the scene.
I would recommend everyone to give this game a try - I enjoyed it. But don't play it more than once or you may risk ruining what is quite a good thriller story.
Nice idea, needs some work, and I think these types of games will only get better.
An absolute killer adventure game for any PS3 owner. March 17, 2010 Mr. Ben G. R. Leslie (Bedlington) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Where to begin, Heavy Rain can feel like a Hollywood movie with a dark, arty crime thriller in the stlye of Se7en or The Silence of the Lambs. Unlike most games Heavy Rain is completly different from other games you've played over the years.
The story for Heavy Rain is a dark thriller story, a serial killer known as the Origami Killer. You'll be playing through 4 charcters who are connected to the story of Heavy Rain. You'll be playing a FBI profiler Norman Jayden, Scott Shelby who's a private investigator trying to find the missing cases of the Origami killer. Madison Paige who's a journalist and a loving father called Ethan Mars who finds out his son goes missing. The beginning of the story can be a little slow to begin with but later on in the game it gets even more serious with shocking surprises.
Gameplay: Unlike most games which are most action and first-person shooters that you get on any system. Heavy Rain's gameplay is completly different from other games you'll be button mashing and making multiple options and choices through out the game.
Before you play Heavy Rain you've got three options to play the game you can play the game with out using the wireless controls if your not familiar with them. But if you are you'll be shaking and tilting your PS3 controller.
There isn't really much to talk about on the Gameplay, the movment controls can be abit fiddly while moving but it can easliy be ignored. Through out Heavy Rain you'll be using the right analog stick to do most tings that you would do every day. Some parts of the game you'll need to hold certain buttons if your holding on to somthing or climbing up a slippley hill.
When your in a fight with someone or in a tight situation you'll have to be quick this is called Quick-time events which you've probably seen in other games like Resident Evil 4. But if you want one of your charcters to live or die, there are multiple endings and sequences in Heavy Rain the choices can change on what choices you make.
Graphics and Sound: Before talking about the graphics, while the game is installing in your PS3 you can make a Origami bird while you wait for the game to install.
Heavy Rain's graphics are very well done with it being exclusive on the PS3 with other games like Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid 4. The graphics are well detailed through the modern day world but set in Amercia, the charcters and enviroment are very as well. Heavy Rain is an interactive Drama game, if you were a fan of the first season of Lost and Heroes you'll be on the edge of your seat later on in the game making you not want to leave your seat what so ever with this dark trhilling story.
The first time we've heard about Heavy Rain was back at E3 2006 which was called The Casting and what the game was going to be like but over the years from now you can see how well done the game is. The soundtrack is also epic to listen to through out Heavy Rain, if you did pre-ordered the HMV special edition it does come with the soundtrack. It makes you feel gripped into the game and to it's story, vocing is very well done as well for all of the charcters you just want to know whats going to happen next.
Overall: I did not want to put the game down after I've played through the first couple of hours of Heavy Rain, I was actully didn't want to turn off my PS3 the story. I didn't really spotted any problems in the game but the downside is that Heavy Rain is a little short and you can easily get the game done under a day pending on how much you want to get out of the game.
If your into Murder/Mystery novals or movies you'll probably get the most out of Heavy Rain, there are trophies if you a trophie collector. If you own a PS3 I would highly recommend this game in anyones PS3 collection.
Tiny faults in an otherwise great game! March 17, 2010 Justice Fezz (London, England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm sure you've all read the reviews by now, and simply want to know if you should put down the cash for it! , well yes and no is the answer. Personally i waited a bit for the price to come down, as they always come down in price, eventually.
Some of the problems i had with the game, was the atmosphere and graphics. Sometimes things would slow down, rarely though. Other times, the actor's voice would change from American to clearly European! Also sometimes the quality of the graphics would change, where you would see the hand as blocky, which kinda ruined the moment really. Especially when most of the game is about the story and presentation.
There is only a little bit of replay value too, if you're into that. And of course no online play :)
It started off slow, but when it picked up it really was great, and i'd recommend it, just buy it when the prices comes down, assuming you can wait a bit.
