Product Description

Follow-up to BioShock, 2K Games' critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2007 release, BioShock 2 is a first-person shooter set in the fictional underwater city of Rapture. As in the original game, BioShock 2 features a blend of fast-paced action, exploration and puzzle-solving as players follow varying paths through the overarching storyline based on the decisions that they are forced to make at various points in the game. In addition to a further fleshing out of the franchise's popular storyline, players can look forward to new characters, game mechanics, weapons, locations and a series first, multiplayer game options.

Set approximately 10 years after the events of the original BioShock, the halls of Rapture once again echo with sins of the past. Along the Atlantic coastline, a monster somehow familiar, yet still quite different from anything ever seen has been snatching little girls and bringing them back to the undersea city. It is a Big Sister, new denizens of Rapture who were once one of the forgotten little girls known as Little Sisters, known to inhabit the city's dank halls. No longer a pawn used to harvest ADAM, the dangerously powerful gene-altering lifeblood of Rapture, from the bodies of others and in turn run the risk of being harvested herself, the Big Sister is now the fastest and most powerful thing in Rapture. You, on the other hand are the very first Big Daddy, in fact the prototype, that for some reason has reactivated. You are similar to the Big Daddies familiar from the original BioShock, but also very different in that you possess free will and no memory of the events of the past ten years. The question is, as you travel through the decrepit and beautiful fallen city beneath the waves, hunting for answers and the solution to your own survival, are you really the hunter, or the hunted?

Amazon.co.uk Review
The original shocked the video gaming world by not only being a great first person shooter, but also an intelligent one. Now one of the greatest stories in interactive fiction is getting another chapter, with a sequel set ten years later.

The most literate first person shooter of 2007 returns
The multiplayer mode features a completely different story and even developer
Will you save the Little Sisters or exploit them?
As a Big Daddy you can now venture outside of Rapture and onto the sea floor

You play the original Big Daddy - a more independently minded prototype to the giant deep sea divers from the first game. The undersea world of Rapture has been taken over by the mysterious Big Sister, who has begun to kidnap children from coastal cities around the world.

A much larger range of plasmid powers are now available, as well as more standard weapons and the Big Daddy's iconic rivet gun and drill. The game's real conflict is emotional though, as you are once again forced to make a decision between sacrificing Little Sisters or protecting them and making your task even harder. Bioshock 2 will make you think, and not just about tactics.

Key Features
  • Atlas shrugged: The award-winning story-telling of Bioshock continues with a new hero and a new threat in the underwater dystopia of Rapture.
  • Evolve yourself: New plasmids, including new dual-wielded attacks, let you unleash amazing powers but at the cost of your humanity.
  • Cry Little Sister: As the first Big Daddy you are far faster than the other lumbering giants, but equipped with the same weapons and the ability to venture onto the ocean floor.
  • Big boss: Defend yourself against the constant attacks of Big Sister by setting up traps and ambushes, but always making sure you have an escape route!
  • Separate lives: For the first time Bioshock has its own multiplayer mode - featuring a completely different story and created by developer Digital Extremes (Unreal Tournament 2004).
About the Developer: 2K Marin
Although founded in 2007 specifically to create new, original games the first release from this Californian developer will be Bioshock 2. The studio is relatively small and designed to work with Take-Two's other developers, such as 2K Boston and 2K Australia in the case of Bioshock.

4 out of 5 stars Fan? or New to the Franchise?   March 7, 2010
D. Nekooi (England, UK)
Hi all, for those that want the review in a nutshell...here it is.

If you have not played the first iteration of the bioshock franchise then you will be extremely enthralled by this game. It captures everything a game needs and more; atmosphere, suspense, character driven story, action, depth, puzzles and strategy. It's the complete package! The addition of Multiplayer and Trophies makes this games longevity a great investment. You will get at around 15 - 20 hours from the Singleplayer (excluding replays for alternate endings, and trophy's). The multiplayer will keep you attracted for at least 5 hours, but again if you want trophy's and to see the full scale of the online experience then you will be long into the 30 hour zone. NOTE: There has also been a recent announcement that a piece of Download-able Content for the Multiplayer will be released in the next few months which should extend the life of online play. Along with this there are also plans to extend the Singleplayer experience with further content!

Now, for those of you that have played the previous game (such as myself). I think you will greatly appreciate the changes in the mechanics (a major one would be the ability to use plasmids and guns at the same time - massive game changer!), however...one problem I had wit the game was the story. Bioshock told such a great story with twists and turns throughout (not to mention the Oh My God ending) - this isn't to say the story in bioshock 2 is not convincing, its just not as good. There arent really any twists and it feels more of an action adventure than an action thriller. Some may prefer this, however the story for me was a major selling point. I must say that the overall experience is great, just be vary of the story not being as much of a shocker this time round!
Multiplayer is good, but again unless your going for trophy's I don't think it will keep you coming back (however there are some very nice modes and little bioshock flavours that spice the experience up and stear it away from your simple run and gun multiplayer shooter)!

I hope this review helps, take care and happy gaming!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent gameplay, atmosphere and storyline   February 25, 2010

Its good to be in Rapture again!

At first i was a little worried that your a Big daddy this time round and wasnt sure how it would work out.

But theyve managed to craft such a good storyline about bigdaddys and little sisters that everything is totally believable, this game progresses what Rapture is all about so much, so its definetely worth getting if your a fan of the first bioshock!

Decisions you make in the game affect the outcome of events later on in the game, a bit like the first game but more in depth, i wont delve in too much as i do not want to spoil the game, but they are interesting choices to make morally...

The graphics are great but i cant help but feel some of the textures have been tuned down in some places but i think its due to the fact theyres alot more going on the screen this time round and they didnt want any slowdown, it doesnt ruin the experience at all, its still top notch and it adds to the whole atmosphere!

There is some really good area's/levels to explore and i was hooked and obsessed with searching every nook and cranny for bits of ammo, Audio diaries and tonics!

As with the first the Splicer dialogue is chilling to hear and its just awesome to listen to their insane ramblings, it puts you on edge because you'll suddenly be jumped on from behind! The Audio diaries are excellent and i enjoyed listening to all of them, theres a few bits of dialogue with nods to the character you played in the first game too!

The best thing i loved about the combat is the Drill you have! Its awesome, especially the charge/dash attack, you'll see splicers smashed right up into the air, or you can drill their faces off, its a bloody massacre! The combat overall is very good, but i still struggle to aim well with Bioshocks system, but the plasmids and weapons are all fun!

I havent had much time with the multiplayer but it appears to be very good and timesplitters like. You have a level up system and you can unlock new weapons and plasmids! You can customize your character and theyres quite a few different multiplayer modes.

Overall its a great atmospheric experience and great fun to play, if not alittle too similer to the first game, but thats not a bad thing.. it took me quite a long time to complete, i played it quite solid for over a week, it doesnt need to be any shorter or longer, its just right, the multiplayer will keep you going for ages...

Now will you kindly buy this game.. ;)

4 out of 5 stars Its Bioshock...enough said...!   February 23, 2010

Its a Bioshock sequel.....pretty obvious really, if you didn't like the first one you won't like this either....luckily I loved the first one and love this one too! I don't care that it wasn't set in a different location to Rapture, that was one of the main reasons why I liked the game so much in the first Bioshock.
The other comment I would make is I have written this review after finishing the game.....not enough people do this and in my opinion the game improves over the last third and there are some great sequences towards the end of the game.

So, reviewing the game:

The good:
Its Bioshock!
Great setting, good enemies, good weapons, upgrades, items, humour, all the usual Bioshock stuff..
Good story length....if you are like me and like collecting all the tape storys, gene tonics, it can take a while...
I like the vita chambers, where you regenerate....saves lots of hassle, especially when fighting the Big Sisters.

The bad:
Graphics...not sure on this one...they are good, but they seemed a little better in the first game, maybe my memory is playing up? Also played the first game on PC....
Was it me, or ws there no strafe control? Usually a well used function on FPS, so was a pain when dodging the enemy fire...

All, in all a much enjoyable experience!

5 out of 5 stars A fun, entertaining, and immersive sequel.   February 22, 2010

Having played and being thoroughly satisfied with Bioshock 1, this was always going to be a must buy for me. Those of you who have played Bioshock 1 will not be unfamiliar with the setting for Bioshock 2, the innovative under water city of Rapture, ten years on, is still in a state of peril. However, the areas of rapture you visit are entirely different to those of Bioshock 1.

Bioshock 2 introduces several big changes to really make it feel like a sequel and that your getting your moneys' worth. Firstly, you play a 'Big Daddy' instead of a human character, the biggest feature of which is the huge drill you now have at your disposal to dispatch enemies, very useful when you run short of ammo on guns.

Secondly, you will remember in Bioshock 1 you have the option of changing weapons between plasmids (genetic upgrades) and weapons (guns etc), in Bioshock 2, plasmids and weapons can now be used simultaneously introducing a new destructive element to the game.

These are probably the main two new features of the single player campaign, although Bioshock 2 does now offer multiplayer modes though I have not yet explored. Other features include a reformed hacking system and several sequences where you are required to swim outside rapture as well as a new story requiring introducing new elements of gameplay especially when gathering ADAM with the little sisters.

I noticed when playing Bioshock 2 that the frame rate was slightly below-par especially during intense fighting, I found that turning 'unlock framerate' on really improved the experience and ran very smooth, although this does apparantly comprimise visual quality, I found the quality to be (still) stunning. In addition, those of you playing Bioshock 1 may find the first stages slightly tedious as you gather plasmids identical to those you had acquired in Bioshock 1, however, prepare to be surprised when you upgrade these as that is where the innovation is in Bioshock 2!

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Better Than The 1st !!!   February 20, 2010
Lee-Lee (Drogheda Ireland)
I Didn't think it was possible. Bioshock was just spectacular and unique and i was sure they couldn't deliver that brilliant atmosphere again - i was wrong. Many will say bioshock did not need a sequel but i think it needed something to carry on the brilliant setting and gameplay. It is set 10 years after the original and continues the story. You are a Big-Daddy,series Delta, keen on revenge against Sophia Lamb who made you put a gun to your own head in Bioshock and left fans thinking he was dead. You wake up in Rapture and your first mission is to get back inside the ruins. I wont say anything else about the story as I dont want to spoil it. The atmosphere and story of the game are not as good as the original, although the weapons and gameplay are much improved. It can be frustatingly hard at times if you play it on the hardest difficulty, but you should get the hang of it after a while. Online is new as well, which is fun but a bit chaotic at times. It is an improvement over Bioshock, but some will say Bioshock while others will agree that Bioshock 2 is downright better. Either way, make sure you pick up this magnificent game

Visuals- 9/10
Story- 9/10
Gameplay- 10/10
Online- 8/10
Overall- 9.5/10
