5 out of 5 stars Give it time...   March 18, 2010

I love this game, the graphics are stunning, the storyline suitably mental and the depth of weapons/accessories/items and their various upgrades will keep people occupied for weeks if that is their thing, especially the ability to dismantle equipment and obtain rare items not available anywhere else. There are also Ultimate weapons to strive towards for each character.

The battle system allows an X button thrash but you will need to know your Paradigms before tackling the later bosses and the massively powerful beasts you encounter further down the line. If you want more control, you can choose your actions more carefully but it may be worth slowing the battle speed down in the options (which I believe you can do).

The character upgrade is similar to the Sphere Grid in FFX, with the option to grind really opening up around chapter 10, but it's worth careful thought where to spend you hard earned Crystalarium(?) points.

There are hunt missions as in FFXII which I haven't reached yet, but I believe the game opens up completely after the main storyline has finished allowing the player to explore/battle to their hearts content. I have the Piggyback book to accompany this and the bestiary lists some big creatures not remotely beatable (within a sensible time) at the moment.

It IS very linear during the story, but in terms of the entire life of the game, it's not a huge problem for me as I know the story will finish and then I can really start levelling and getting on with the hunts.

If you can stand Hope's whining and Snow's winking, stick with it is my advice. It's a great game.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!   March 17, 2010

I pre-oredered as early as you could
and as you do, got very excited. Then came all the bad reviews. This really scared me and at one point was considering canceling the order, but i held out and got it. I gota say it's brilliant! It is not quite as good as 10 (the one i rate highest), but it is knocking on its door. It's a really story-based game, which im a huge fan of, and the characters are well constructed. You find yourself in the story very early on. Im no good at this reviewing thing, so all i can say is, dont read the reviews on gaming websites. GET THAT GAME!

3 out of 5 stars It gets a little repetitive   March 17, 2010

Review is 10hrs into Game.
Good points,
interesting new battle system, graphics and cut scenes are impressive.

Bad points
Characters now seem to be v predicatable, anima style players (snow is annoying indeed, I suspect translation/humour problems)

Very linear plot, its pretty much a march, battle, march battle etc.

You cannont fight more enemies per section than is set out, as such the leveling up abilities are rigidly controlled such that everyone who ever plays the game is at exactly the same level for every battle.

Leveling up of weapons and accesories is a little random, it seems to want you to save your game, try something, reboot, then load game, then try something, reboot then try something. I wish it had a simple undo/reverse command.

I can sort of see what they are trying to do, which is to make the game easier and playable for more people.

Still like it, but it seems to be heading in a new direction.

I hear the game changes out of the linear path at 25hrs, I am interested to see what that is like.

3 out of 5 stars Nice to look at, leaves a lot to be desired   March 17, 2010

While FFXIII is amazing to look at the whole 2 battle - cut scene - 2 battles - cut scene leaves a lot to be desired. Don't get me wrong I'm still playing it, it's just a really annoying part of the game play.
